7.5.7 Plastics

Thermoplastic elastomers based on rosin acids were produced using reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT), ring-opening polymerization (ROP), ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP), or click chemistry. Thermoplastic elastomers are produced by reacting rosin acids with acrylic acids, caprolactone, or butyrolactones to form thermoplastic resins. These thermoplastic resins are used in varnishes, nanocomponents as well as stimuli-responsive polymers (US8569427, US8809466). The stimuli-responsive polymers can be used in areas such as drug delivery, tissue engineering, and sensors (Figure 7.7).
